Victoria |

Victoria is the only one of our Bovan Neras that is in any way easily identifiable to all of us. When she arrived, we noticed that she had quite an unsightly bulge on her breastbone, with no feathers covering it. We trawled through our chicken books and literature and suspect that she had something called a breast blister. This is a blistering of the skin, possibly as a result of prolonged contact with chicken excrement or lack of perching facilities (this might explain why all four don’t roost in the traditional way at night, on perches).
We're not 100% sure of this diagnosis, but she certainly seems a healthy bird and over the period of time that we have had her, her feathers are growing beautifully over the affected area - so much so that we are having difficulty identifying her again!

Born: 2006
Gender: Female (Hen)
Breed: Bovan Nera
Appearance: As outlined above.
Personality: Victoria, like our other chickens of her type has an exuberant personality and is never backwards in coming forwards. She follows us like a little dog at times and has a tendency to always be somewhere that she shouldn't be, such as digging holes in the compost heap. Although, I know you are supposed to turn over your compost heap, which is a bit of a chore, so maybe she is just trying to help with the gardening.
Favourite Food: Bugs of all types, especially from under our plant mulching and on the compost heap.

Habits: Making a nest on top of our straw bales and laying her eggs there rather than in the nesting boxes like our other chickens.
Naughtiest Moments: Pecking the bread out of our hands and almost taking a chunk of finger with it - a regular occurrence. Best fed bread from a distance, by throwing it for her.
