Trouble

We were lucky enough to be given Trouble by Laura's friend, who was emigrating to another country. She needed a good home for her hamster and we were very happy to have him. He is a very tame hamster who settled into our home very quickly.

Syrian hamster Trouble With NutHe came with his own cage and toys, which helped in settling him in and we had been told what his favourite foods, so we made sure that he got plenty of these. We gradually introduced ourselves to him and he has allowed us to handle him almost from the start, he really is a delightful and tame hamster.

She saved up her pocket money and bought him a new cage, called - "The Laura Cage", which has two floors and more room for his wheel and other hamster toys.

Syrian hamster, TroubleBorn: 2004

Gender: Male

Breed: Syrian (Golden) Hamster

Appearance: Trouble is a slightly larger than average sized Syrian hamster who has medium length hair, which is mainly golden with white patches in a pattern known as piebald.

Personality: He has a lovely placid personality and is probably the tamest hamster that we have ever met. He sleeps most of the day, like most hamsters, but often comes out to see us at dinner time, when he rummages around in his cage. He also slowly wanders through his tubes and only occasionally has a walk in his wheel.

Favourite Food: White chocolate hamster drops (sugar free), he also likes an occasional piece of apple, cut up into small pieces.

Syrian hamster, TroubleHabits: Unlike any of our other hamsters he goes downstairs in his cage and fills his pouches up with hamster wood shavings. He then carries these upstairs and empties them all into his bedding area. He continues to do this until his nest box is stuffed full, with barely room for him, and downstairs is bare!

Naughtiest Moments: Once "escaped" (we had accidentally left the door open) from his cage and was found in the coal bucket with very sooty black paws!

Updates:

Syrian hamster Trouble's swollen testiclesRecently Trouble had seemed a bit poorly for a week or two, being very sluggish and off his food. We had a good look at him ourselves and it didn't didn't take long to find the likely problem. His testicles had become very swollen, enlarged and hot to the touch. We wondered if he may have an infection in his testicles or even a tumour, which can sometimes present like this.

Syrian hamster Trouble's swollen testiclesWe took took him to the vet who agreed that it was the likely cause of the problem and she gave him a course of antibiotics and steroids to cover both infections and inflammation. Things have improved a bit over the last week and his testicles have gotten a bit smaller. He is still not himself though and we are going to keep a close eye on him.

If things don't improve fully then the vet has said that surgically removing his testicles would be the best solution. However, he is getting fairly old for a hamster and may not survive the operation. We might then have a difficult decision to make with Trouble over the next few weeks. You can find updates on our animal blog.

Sadly on 17th December Trouble died. He was a lovely hamster and will be missed by all of us.

Our lovely hamster Trouble's memorial baner

I wrote a poem for my little baby trouble, I hope you like it.

Your ginger colour brightens my eyes,
your affectionate personality lightens my life,
Now you are gone my world is dull,
A fog spreads over a once happy sun,
'Can't wait for the day we meet again
I hope you remember we are always best friends,
My little man always you will remain in my heart,
From day to day, from light to dark,
You may not be within reach of my hands,
But in my heart you are always within glance,
You lay in a box ready to be laid in the ground,
And in my head will be your beautiful sound,
Yet nothing comes from your pink lips,
The padding of your soft paws makes the world a drift,
I could just sit and look at your beautiful face,
More wonderful than the whole hamster race,
No matter how far away, you will always be near,
When I remember you it comforts me in fear,
You are never gone but always in my heart,
Even though your sweet face is not near mine,
Your mind and mine will combine,
With thoughts of the other, memories never fade,
Whilst we look for the glorious day,
That day when we will meet up again,
And then we will grow even more wonderful friends...
