Tabitha

Tabitha

Tabitha is another of our Bovan Nera chickens and, as already mentioned, all four of these chickens are a little like clones. It is very difficult to tell them apart or identify any easy to spot differences in their appearances. We have relied on Laura who is the expert, to correctly match up each chicken with their pictures – can you spot the differences…?

TabithaBorn: 2006

Gender: Female (Hen)

Breed: Bovan Nera

Appearance: Like our other Bovan Neras Tabitha is predominantly black with orangey/brown feathers on her neck and chest. She does have brown patches further down the body, which helps a little to pick her out from the other three. Her eyes are also a bit darker than the other birds.

Personality: She is a little bit more shy than the other three of her type although, by our other chickens standards this still makes her pretty up front in her attitude. She is more a follower than a leader though, and will usually be trailing along behind the other three Bevans, as they do stick together most of the time.

Favourite Food: Like the others she will eat almost anything, but does have a particular predilection for fallen apples from our trees and strawberries. There's certainly no danger of her not getting her "5 portions a day" of fruit.

Chickens sleeping on shelfHabits: All of our chickens in the past have slept by perching on one of the many perches in the chicken house. Tabitha however, never perches, she sleeps on a shelf on top of the nesting boxes and is often joined by the others there too. We think she is setting a new trend.

Naughtiest Moments: Not restricting herself to pecking away at our fallen and damaged apples, she once had a feast from a bucket of freshly picked apples which we had left when we went for a break. When we returned, she had had a little nibble out of all of the apples that were accessible from the top!

TabithaAs mentioned Tabitha has a dislike of perching and this is catching on with the other chickens. At dusk, they all come into the chicken house and clamber together on the top of the roosting boxes, with barely and inch of space spare. It looks quite ridiculous, especially as the chicken house is so big that they are spoilt for room. What makes matters even worse is that Tiger, who used to perch at night, now joins them!

We are actively trying to educate our young chicks, Velvet, Primrose and Amber to perch so that this sleeping arrangement issue isn't exacerbated once all the chickens are together.
