Sooty |

Sooty, our beautiful brown-bear Syrian hamster, joined our animal family on 22nd December 2007, just in time to celebrate Christmas on the farm. At the pet shop, she was housed with another Syrian hamster, who we couldn't bear to leave behind on her own and so it was that Riley joined us too!
As Syrian hamsters have to be housed alone we had to separate them on arrival home, but they both have nice spacious housing and plenty of human contact. She has settled in very well and we have been handling her daily and she is becoming a pretty tame hamster already.
We have housed Sooty in a traditional hamster wire cage, but an extremely large one, which as you can see in the picture below has lots of hamster tubing for her to climb around in and toys to keep her amused. |

Born: October, 2007
Gender: Female
Breed: Syrian Hamster
Appearance: Sooty was named following some very apt suggestions from our hamster discussion forum members. With dark browny-grey, velvety fur she really suits her name. She feels like a soft rex rabbit and has very alert, inquisitive ears that always seem to be upright and listening out. Her pink nose and eye liner give her a very adorable appearance. Sooty looks like a miniature bear and is so cuddly – if she’d only stay still long enough!
Personality:
Lively and very nosy, Sooty is always on the go. An expert climber, she can scale the sides of her very tall cage in a flash and appears to have no sense of danger. Rather than go through her cage tubes, she is so agile that she walks on the them, rarely faltering. Sooty has become tame quite quickly and will only nip at you if she mistakenly thinks your finger is some food.
Favourite Food: A real treat lover, Sooty won’t refuse anything on offer whether it’s yogurt drops, nuts or veggies. She needs keeping an eye on though, as she seems to be taking more of a liking to her treats than “boring” old hamster food!

Habits: Sooty LOVES to chew her cage bars, despite having lots of far more interesting and tasty chews in her cage. Maybe she’s just trying to find her way out again for another little exploration!
Naughtiest Moments: Too new to have been a naughty hamster yet, but watch this space!
