Shaun As A Lamb

Shaun is the only boy amongst our sheep, although castration as a young lamb means that he won’t be fathering any spring lambs any time soon!

Shaun in food troughAlthough we try not to have favourites, Shaun does have a way of always getting the most attention, well after the rest of the sheep have given up and gone off to graze. We should probably have seen this coming – as a lamb he was always the slowest to take his milk and would end up sitting on your knee to finish off his drink! While the others were clambering round trying to head butt him off of his bottle so that they could have his too.Shaun sketch by Becci

ShaunBorn: February 2007

Gender: Male (Wether - Ram who has been castrated)

Breed: Mixed Breed Sheep

Appearance: With a distinctive Roman nose, Shaun can usually be quite easily identified amongst all the other sheep, although Florence sometimes does a good impression of him!

Personality: If you are struggling from appearances alone to recognise Shaun, his very distinctive personality will always be a give away.  A real “mummy’s boy”, he always follows you around and has as very loving, gentle, affectionate and inquisitive personality. Shaun will linger to snuggle into you long after the others have gone and appear to really enjoy the extra attention, hugs and kisses.

ShaunFavourite Food: Well, sheep don’t really have a huge variety of food choices and Shaun, like all the sheep, loves his morning food pellets.  It’s a real fun-filled battle to get the bucket of pellets into the feeder before all the sheep trample you down and tip the whole container over!

Habits: Shaun needs to be involved in everything you do and even feels the need to participate in helping to muck out his barn.  He will jump in the wheelbarrow every time it’s out and has to be physically tipped to persuade him that he really is not helping!  He is very good at breaking up the cakes of straw using his strong front legs so that his boudoir meets the desired requirements!

ShaunNaughtiest Moments: Whilst cleaning out the sheep barn, Shaun was “helping” and exploring the tractor.  After collecting all the dirty straw in the trailer, the keys to the tractor were no longer in the ignition – Shaun had kindly removed them and dropped them on the grass (it’s a good job we love him!).

All of our sheep but especially Shaun, are very tame, which is as a result mainly of being bottle fed and being used to early human contact from the petting farm where we bought them.

ShaunAt Animal Lovers Web.com, we will be considering rearing our own lambs next year and for this we will need to bring in a ram for a few weeks (known as a TUP).  It will be interesting to see how we and our sheep adapt to an “outsider” who may not be used to the human contact that our sheep our.  We'll also have to probably do a bit of juggling so that Shaun doesn't feel he has had his nose put out of joint!
