Pigs, Lottie & Betty

Lottie is one of our Kune Kune/pot bellied cross pigs that we obtained from an animal rescue centre in Scotland. She and her six siblings had been rescued from a farm and a home had to be found for the piglets. We were more than happy to take two of them and as our first introduction to keeping pigs we have been delighted with the experience so far.

Pig, LottieAs you should before getting any new animal, we had researched a fair bit into keeping pigs before taking these two piglets on. We visited a number of pig farmers to meet various breeds of pigs. These included Gloucester Old Spots pigs, Saddleback pigs and Tamworth pigs. In the end we decided on our Kune kune/Pot Bellied cross pigs as they grow to only about half the size of a standard breed pig, which we felt were a more manageable size for pet pigs.

Born: 7th January 2008

Gender: Female

Breed: Kune Kune/Pot Bellied Pig cross

Appearance: Lottie has black hair all over her body, which is tinged with copper highlights down her flanks and around her bottom. Her snout is black with a pink horizontal stripe in the middle and her white socks are much less obvious than her sister, Betty's. She's a bit smaller in height than Betty and not as fat round the middle.

Personality: Lottie loves our company, especially if it involves a tummy tickle, back scratch or chin rub. She goes into a trance when she is being stroked and stands motionless. She is very playful, like a puppy really and tears around her pen, excitedly.

Favourite Food: Well, she is no different to her sister, Betty in her love of food. Lottie has taken a particular liking to pears and carrots, grunting and squealing loudly when it's treat time in-between meals. She and Betty love grass too and have made a pretty quick job of ploughing up their run area. Lottie looks like a cow with grass sticking out either side of her mouth.

Habits: Both pigs LOVE to root and dig and spend serious amounts of time heading south!! Lottie has a longer snout than Betty and can certainly get some leverage in her digging missions. She seems to always have some soil and muck stuck to the end of her nose – fortunately she doesn't mind us flicking any dirt off!

Naughtiest Moments: Escaping!! Lottie was having a back scratch and in her usual trance-like state. Suddenly, she sprung to life, the door to the pen was ajar slightly, and she made her bid for freedom! Molly and Sam didn't know whether to run away or chase her and we were unsure whether Lottie would panic (because we certainly were). Fortunately, food bribery is always an option for most animals and we managed to coax Lottie into a corner and grab her.
