Betty

Pig, Betty

Betty is one of our pair of Kune Kune/Pot Bellied Pig crosses that we got from an animal rescue centre in Scotland in March 2008. Keeping pet pigs has been a great experience and these two little sisters are virtually inseparable. They share our fields with our sheep and they get on very well.

Pig, BettyBetty and Lottie spend virtually their entire day eating, they graze the field and will also eat whatever snacks we give them as treats and come running at the very hint of us approaching the fields. They are obviously highly intelligent animals (certainly compared with sheep) and in many ways they are a bit like having dogs.

Born: 7th January 2008

Gender: Female

Breed: Kune Kune/Pot Bellied Pig cross

Appearance: Betty has black hair all over her body, with a completely black snout which is shorter than her sister, Lottie's. Her trotters have white socks on them and. She is a little bit taller and rounder than Lottie.

Personality: When we first got Betty, she was a very nervous pig and took a bit longer to tame than Lottie. She is now, however, much calmer and enjoys a good back scratch. She seems to be the dominant pig and takes no messing from Lottie and mealtimes, making sure that she always has the gets in the food bowl first!

Favourite Food: ANYTHING – and the more of it, the better! Lottie does love bananas though and eats them so excitedly, that they squish out the sides of her mouth. Both Betty and Lottie remind us of our dog Molly at mealtimes – when they know food is coming, they begin slobbering and salivating uncontrollably!!

Habits: Betty loves to bury herself under the straw and makes a little den for herself. When it’s feeding time, she runs out of her bedroom covered in straw.

Naughtiest Moments: Betty has taken some time to tame and we had to be really careful in the first few weeks because she was likely to try and bite you. We had to be very firm with her – a pig bite is not something to be taken lightly!! It was difficult having to scold her because we didn't want her disliking us – but it’s paid off in the end. As long as you’re not daft enough to have any food in your hand, then your fingers are quite safe!
