Lucy As A Lamb

Lucy was Jemima's sister and when Jemima died in August 2007 we were quite worried as to how this may affect Lucy. As Jemima and Lucy had been very close and had never been separated. Lucy shared many characteristic with Jemima not only in looks but also in personality, both being quieter and more reserved than the other sheep but very sweet in nature.

Lucy & MollyWe suspect that Lucy was aware of Jemima’s illness and lack of mobility, as she would often wait behind with her, even if all the other sheep had gone into the bottom field.  Luckily Lucy seems to have adapted OK since her sister died and appears to have good relationships with the other sheep.  She is a lovely reminder to us of her sister.

Lucy nosing through fenceBorn: February 2007

Gender: Female (Ewe)

Breed: Mixed Breed Sheep

Appearance: Lucy has a really sweet-looking face which complements her shorter stature and generally smaller appearance.  She has a lovely brown nose which, as a lamb, helped us to distinguish her from her sister, Jemima’s black one.

Personality: One of our more chilled out sheep, Lucy is much more laid back and generally takes life in her stride.  She is a friendly sheep but isn't too keen on an over-indulgence of affection – which is fine by us, as Shaun seems to take everyone’s share!

Favourite Food: She is particularly fond of apples from our neighbours tree (see below) and the leaves from a passion fruit tree which overhangs her field.

Lucy chewing Laura's lacesHabits: Our neighbours have an apple tree that overhangs our field.  Lucy takes advantage of the fallen apples and is so keen on them that she risks the wrath of our dog Sam – who loves to use the apples as makeshift balls to play with.  It’s quite comical to see Lucy stroll up to Sam to investigate her “ball”.  She is quite oblivious to Sam’s snarling lip – just as well!

Naughtiest Moments: Lucy had the cheek to have a horrendous episode of diarrhoea and looked like she’d been sat in a chocolate puddle for a few days! There was some serious mess to clear up and no respect for the lovely clean, fresh straw in the barn at all. Well, it wasn't her fault, really and she was very good at letting us trim her daggy wool to clean her up – so she’s forgiven – this time!

Update:

Sadly Lucy became very unwell and died on 25th May, 2008. She had just stopped eating for a few days and seemed very listless and we got the vet to see her, apart from a temperature they couldn't find anything specific wrong and gave her an injection of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, but despite this her breathing became laboured and she passed away with her head in Laura's lap.

RIP, Lucy, much loved and badly missed.
