Well our "Unnamed" Dwarf Russian hamster finally has a name, voted for by you. The full vote results are given in the table below and Elly it is, what a lovely name and already it has started to suit her.
Since originally giving Elly her own web page, at a time when we thought she was male, a lot has happened. It quickly became apparent, as the delivered a litter of seven healthy hamster babies unexpectedly, that this lovely hamster was definitely a female.
She proved to be a lovely mother and together with Sunny, the father, looked after her babies very well for three weeks. Until we had to separate the baby hamsters off, for protection from the father hamster and to prevent inbreeding. As hamsters reach sexual maturity very early, at about 6 weeks and will mate with siblings and parents.
A name at last! The vote results were as follows:

So Elly it is!
Born: August 2007
Gender: Female
Breed: Dwarf Russian Hamster
Appearance: Grey with brown and white marking and a dark stripe down her back.
Personality: A slightly more reserved hamster than Sunny, she does a great impression of a meerkat, surveying her territory, before she ventures too far from her bed!
Favourite Food: Hamster popcorn and apples
Habits: A hamster-wheel addict who will run for miles and miles! We would strongly advise that you don’t keep your hamster cage in a room that is below anyone’s bedroom – unless you find that a constant whirring sound helps you to nod off at night! We think that we might need to invest in one of those silent hamster wheels soon!
Naughtiest Moments: It's nice to report that we have an animal that seems to be on its best behaviour, although we’re sure that, in time, we'll be able to relay some misdemeanour! In fact she could almost have won the hamster mother of the year award and is a little angel.
Both of our hamsters were too young to be sexed accurately when we got them from our local pet shop. They were, however, very responsible in agreeing to take any litters from us if the situation arose. As the hamsters grew and we started to tame them, we thought that we were convinced that we had two male hamsters. Sexing hamsters is not easy though, particularly when they are still young. The difficulty mainly lies in keeping them still long enough to do the job!
Anyway, as you know, and we had a litter of hamster babies. Elly turned out to be female and a mother at only about 8 weeks old herself!
