Our Guinea pig had surgery on a cyst on his back on Wednesday last and I expected him to be a bit out of sorts but how long is this likely to last he only went upstairs in his run today for a brief time but doesn't seem his usual cheery self. Should we just give him time to get used to having the surgery or could there something wrong. Also any tips on administering liquid medication to Guinea pigs.

Thanks

I'm no expert on this so don't take it all in, but the obvious answer seems that if he's just got back from surguery, he may feel a bit weird so settling in again is always essential ..

As rachael said it is probs becuase of the surgery but if you are really worried you may want to ring the vets or see how he gets on over the weekend. going to the vets alone is a very tramatic experiance not to menchion an operation on top of that. Is he eating ok?

Like Tomm said, is he eating, drinking, pooping, peeing?  Also, he may need a little extra vit C?  I'm not an expert either, but maybe Dazie or Catherine will be on soon.  They have more experience.

When our gp was neutered, the vet gave us a syringe to administer the medication oraly.  My daughter held him and I just kind of slowly squirted it into his mouth.  (the vet said it was a little sweet so that he would like it)

Good luck! hope he perks up for you.

Thanks for all the advice. It's much appreciated. He's eating good and pooing etc. I think a lot of his nervousness comes from the fact we adopted him when he was a big lad (we arent quite how old he is) as he was found in a garden and put into a pet shelter. He has started to go up to the top of his run now.

I have to take him back after the weekend for a check up. He's gonna love me for that

You could mix the medication in a little baby food. Carrots are the best as the flavour is strong enough to hide the taste of the medication. I think it is normal to be a little off after surgery. Also you are right about rescue piggies reacting to things. My shelter piggies get nervous at any upset. When I had to move them during a power failure, it took weeks for them to calm down. They spent the night at the neighbour's house where it was warm, but they were really scared at being somewhere else. Also I had to leave them and that upset them a lot.

Your piggie will get over it. Just be reassuring for the next weeks and he will be fine.

Hi there I hope piggy has made a full recovery?  What medication did the vet prescribe?  How did the check up go?
