Tesco hits a new low with arrival of the £1.99 chicken (Independant, UK)
Tesco slashed the price of a whole chicken to £1.99 yesterday, in a move that critics warned would heap financial pressure on the poultry industry and make it harder to the improve welfare of factory-farmed animals.

Just when you think that the tide is turning for chicken welfare and justice for chicken farmers this goes totally against all of that!

John

It really is very disappointing - why couldn't Tesco, which is such a huge company that makes zillions of £ profits/year, reduce the price of it's free-range birds instead?  I think they've made a huge mistake and the backlash from animal welfare charities and farmers that is appearing in the press seems to confirm this.
I've e-mailed Tesco today and told them just what I think about the situation

As consumers we are very powerful. We get to "vote" with our shopping habits. If enough people react maybe the company will listen. Individually there is little we can do, but collectively, we can move mountains.

I might look for a site doing a petition or something. Maybe we could make a petition on the forum.

I never thought about online petitions, but I suppose that is the way of the future. If enough people complain, most companies listen.

Diane has a well merited rant about the price of chickens and chicken welfare in our blog:

Why did the chicken cross the road?
…to escape the man from Tesco selling her for a paltry £1.99!

People that make these decisions are money obsessed, yeah its only normal to want to have a good profit in what ever you are doing but this is going too far. I bet they didn't even think for one minute about the chicken before slaughter.
