We came across some piglets needing a home in a news story and they are one of the types of pig that we were hoping to get in the spring. They are Kune Kune pigs and are not yet weaned from the mother.
We have contacted the Scottish SPCA's rescue centre in Balerno where they are being looked after and we are really hoping that we could have two.

Regards,
John

Well, I can see that I don't need to send you the article then. When I saw it I thought of you. They kept saying they need a special home, what with the pigs being part of a petting zoo. Now where in England is there a special home that might want pet pigs. I hope you get them. It would be a wonder ending to the story and they are rather cute.

For every animal in need of a home there is a special place. And for everyone looking for an animal, there is a special pet. This sounds like a perfect match.

We got a call from the SSPCA in Scotland today - the Kune Kune pigs are weaned and they've reserved 2 girl piglets for us!!!!!  They are contacting the RSPCA here in England as we need to have a home visit to make sure that they are happy that we've got the right facilities to look after them.

The pigs are apparently a cross between a Kune Kune and a pot bellied pig, one is black all over and one is pink with black spots (sounds like a mini Gloucestershire Old Spot!).  We're very excited

It sounds like you are adopting a baby. Well in some ways you are adopting two. We are all hoping for piggies on your farm. Girls eh. Does that mean pigglets some year? It would be hard to resist.

We expect our RSPCA visit next week to make sure we are suitable for them!
A bit nerve wracking coming under scrutiny but I think we should pass we have 3 possible areas to keep them in:
1. dog run which has previously housed dogs, rabbits and lambs it is the best (?only) thing we have ever built!
2. the chicken run which would be great mingling with the chickens
3. the fields and mingle with the sheep which would also be really intersting to see how the settle in the hierarchy.

John

I would love fo them to share the field with the sheep, and the dog(/rabbit/lamb) kennel for when they are little piggylet hogs. *random* Doesn't the word "piglet" sound really really good - wins the prize for the cutest baby animal name ever! Piglet, piglet piglet piglet...

It sounds like you are more than ready for the visit, but I know how you feel. I don't like anyone inspecting my setup. It is unnerving.

Cute baby names: how about a Joey or a gosseling or a cygnet.

We have given two of the 4 we are keeping names. Meet pebbles

Pebbles

And flufferella

Flufferella

Yet to give the other two hamsters names. Sadly one of the four girls has turned out to be male, and as they are now 6 weeks will need to be split of in his own cage =-(. We already have 2 males in their own cages all alone, Harry and Gromit. I wish we could pair up Gromit + the new boy but you know what hamsters are like, it would be a blood bath. Back on the subject of pigs. I cannot wait - grrr when will the RSPCA come! They have not rang yet.

EDIT: for some reason the pics arnt showing up, so I just put links insted.

Is flufferella a fawnie? Very interesting choice of names. We all hope you get you pigs real soon. Opps I just woke Jonathan, I will have to bed her down for the night. It is rather late here. She has been napping on me for some time. So good night all....here's hoping for piggies.

Kune Kune's are a small breed pig but grow quite a bit bigger than a Westie.  You can see the litter of piglets that we are getting our two girls from in this article from the Scottish newspaper where we first heard about their plight and need for new homes.

The piglets were about two weeks old when this video was taken - I think they'll be around 8 weeks old now and weigh roughly 10kgs/22 lbs (one and a half stones).

When they are fully grown, they can weigh 140-220lbs (10-15 stones) - definitely a little larger than even the fattest Westie .  A lot of publicity around these pigs (and pot bellied pigs) cause a bit of an explosion in their popularity with  people keeping them as house pigs.  BIG MISTAKE.  Although I'm sure there will be some examples of very well trainied house pigs, their natural behaviour is to root and forage and they should be kept outdoors.

You will often see advertised these pigs for re-homing after their owners belatedly realise that the cute little piglet they once had is now destroying the house
