Guinea pigs make an incredible range of sounds and it is often difficult to be sure what they all mean and whether your guinea pig is   , or   , leaving you!

The web site below has very helpfully recorded many of these guinea pig sounds to try to help you understand how your guinea pigs are feeling when they make their wonderful sounds:

Regards,
John

I think pigbert speaks a different piggie dialect. Of course he has never done stressed or angry or lonely for that matter. Mostly he calls for treats and reacts to treats. He only needs two sounds, but he does expand them to express the "treats please" and "oh good, treats" so that I can tell how much he wants a treat and how much he liked a treat.

With hamsters it is harder to tell which is their favourite unless they just refuse to eat some (Sooty used to do this but now he does not care what treat, as long as it is a treat!) kinds, pigbert is pretty helpful then. Its so funny when you give a guinea pig a treat, it just slowly disapears into the mouth - they are great to watch! Penny Purrs like on the guinea pig sound link, so she is happy, curious or "ohh-lah-lah-ing", I doubt its the last one, any of the first two is a good sign  , they all sound pretty similar. When you tickle Pennys sides she keeps purring, then stops when you stop, and starts, then stops - she is so cute!

Well that's sort of made me feel better! When you attempt to pick these two up they are obviously stressed but I have heard either the happy or curious noise today!

I love the piggies sounds.  We only have two and the boys aren't together so we don't get to hear to to much except when I hold mine he purrs and when they see eachother(there divided by a grid) the purr and rumble.

Wow John that's really helpful. It really helped me on understanding how my piggie Alfie is feeling. Most of the time hungry though
Although 20 minutes later I've just realised this forum was made last year. But it's still cool.

This thread is a classic and we keep adding to it. I have 6 piggies now so I hear all kinds of sounds. I think the food sounds probably come first. But then they have a range of food sounds. I love the way they call when they can see me cutting their veggies. If their volume could make me cut faster I would be done instantly.
