Amber

Amber was very luck to be born at all. She was placed in the incubator at the same time as both Velvet and Primrose. During our routine candling of the eggs to see if there were actually chicks growing inside, it didn't appear to us that Amber’s shell had anything growing in it at all. Luckily we left it in to incubate anyway, otherwise we wouldn't have had the privileged of meeting this little chick.

Amber just hatchedVelvet and Primrose had both hatched 2 days earlier than expected (i.e. 19 days) and by day 21, we were tempted to assume that Amber’s egg was not viable. Fortunately, that evening, the egg came to life and we were shocked, but pleasantly surprised, to have another little bundle of fluff to join our lovely brood!

Amber at about 3 weeksBorn: 18th September 2007

Gender: Female

Breed: Mixed Breed (father Tiger, mother unknown)

Appearance: Amber was born almost the archetypal yellow chick, which was lovely for us as we had never had one before. As she is growing up, her colour is more mixed with browns and yellows taking over from the fluffy yellow chick.

Amber just over 4 weeksPersonality: She’ a real cute chick who likes to practice balancing on your arm in preparation for the main perch in the hen house, we hope. She does tweet a lot when you try to catch her but calms down and enjoys taking bread out of your hand eventually.

Favourite Food: Amber loves her chick crumbs and bread treats. She and the other chicks are having to battle at the moment for their food, as the older birds can’t resist wading in for extras.

AmberHabits: Hiding! Amber sometimes gives you a fright when you go to let the chicks out of their barn in a morning, as she can be quite elusive and seems to enjoy hiding behind the straw bales or greenhouse equipment.

Naughtiest Moments: Pretending that she really wasn't alive at all – as above!

Amber at 8 weeksWe are currently at the stage of integrating the chicks with the adult chickens. For artificially incubated chicks this should be done any time after 8 weeks of age. It has to be done gradually and with caution. As the adult chickens can be quite cruel to the young chicks and can even seriously injure them.

Luckily, it has been going fairly well so far and you can read more about integrating the chicks with the chickens in our blog.

We would expect to have all of our chickens sleeping together in the hen house by the time the chicks are about 12 weeks old. Although, we are still not sure of their genders. If, as we suspect, that at least one of them is a cockerel, then we could have problems. We will post updates on the blog and here on Amber's page as it becomes clearer who's a hen and who is a cockerel.

Update:

Here are some pictures of Amber at 12 weeks old she is still a lovely chicken but no longer the cute fluffy little yellow chick:
